Distinguished and Famous people from South Sydney
🖋️ Arthur Stace
Arthur Stace was born at Redfern in 1885 and experienced poverty, insecure work and heavy drinking before the religious conversion that changed his life. A sermon inspired him to chalk Eternity on Sydney's footpaths in an elegant script. For years the word appeared while the writer's identity remained largely unknown. Stace's repeated small act became part of the city's visual memory and eventually a symbol reproduced far beyond the pavements he walked. His biography begins in inner southern Sydney and connects hardship, faith and an unusual personal mission with a mark recognised by generations of residents.
🏉 Russell Crowe
Russell Crowe's connection with South Sydney is sustained involvement with the Rabbitohs. In 2006 club members approved the investment proposal he put forward with Peter Holmes à Court, beginning a new ownership chapter while retaining a place for the membership. The club's account links that period with the establishment of Souths Cares, supporting young people and families, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Crowe's film career makes him a familiar name, but the local story here is rugby league and community involvement. It is a specific association with an institution whose identity is deeply tied to South Sydney.
🎵 The Kid LAROI
The Kid LAROI, born Charlton Howard, grew up partly in Waterloo before an international music career took him to Los Angeles. His 2022 return to the neighbourhood included a donation of $100,000 to the Fact Tree Youth Service and time meeting local young people. The visit gave the relationship a practical form beyond the familiar hometown reference in a celebrity profile. His story connects inner southern Sydney's public housing and youth services with the rapid rise of a young First Nations performer, while the return visit showed that the earlier community remained important after the world tours began.
